I felt kind of like an intellectual bully a couple of weeks ago when I told a co-worker that I thought anyone who wasn’t even aware of who their elected U.S. Congressperson is was ignorant. I told him this and then he acknowledged that he himself didn’t know his U.S. congressman despite his fervent political views that are on the other side of the ideological spectrum. Let’s just face it…Americans tend to be on the whole … quite apathetic when it comes to knowledge of government or the politics that ensue therein.
STOP BEING APATHETIC
Your involvement matters. Yes – politics can be boring…I get it. News can be depressing – sure. But whether you like it or not – applying the Ostrich head in sand technique does not protect you from the predators. You are being robbed blind…your livelihood, your means to make a decent and fair wage, your children’s opportunities for a life that doesn’t include minimum wage or debtor’s prison. And frankly – I think politics is sexy….I must be in the minority in that regard.
START PAYING ATTENTION
If you don’t know who your congressman is – YOU are part of the problem. Because if you don’t even know their name – you sure as fuck don’t know what they’re actually doing for or against your interests. The state of our politics is ruining our country; and it’s only this way because Americans allow it to be so. And until Americans really get engaged – it’s going to stay this way and Congress will be business as usual.
