The Obama administration comes out with a web ad highlighting Bill Clinton’s response to Mitt Romney’s extreme makeover at the debate. Of course – there was the Bill Clinton moment at the Democratic National Convention and the Obama campaign wants to find some traction on the idea that Romney was LYING throughout the debate. Enter Bill Clinton.
I could give you example after example regarding Romney’s constantly changing position on almost anything. He is like a political whack-a-mole. He tells moderate groups that he’s moderate and conservative groups that he’s conservative and he’s hoping that all of them are too stupid to notice the difference in the age of YouTube. When Romney is put on the spot about something controversial or unpopular – he says XYZ and then when no one is really paying attention – his campaign says “well what he really meant was …”.
Case in point … when asked by the Des Moines Register Editorial Board about his position on abortion – he said:
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”
After that interview was posted on the web – his campaign said this:
“Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life, and he will be a pro-life president. Gov. Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”
Nevermind the entire campaign where Governor Romney has said he will try to put pro-life judges on the bench that would turn over Roe V. Wade. Politifact rated that as “mostly true” HERE.
Nevermind when Romney told Mike Huckabee that he ABSOLUTELY supported a constitutional amendment to establish life at the beginning of conception and thusly … rape and incest victims could not choose to have an abortion. Some forms of birth control would be illegal. The morning after pill would be illegal. In other words – all of those things would be murder and women would face jail time for having an illegal abortion or killing a fetus through the morning after pill etc. That’s Romney’s position.
HUCKABEE: Would you have supported a constitutional amendment that would have established definition of life beginning of life at conception?
ROMNEY: Absolutely.
Remember – the Republican party platform is that rape victims should be forced to give birth; you can see that HERE. And Romney is on record of eliminating funding for women’s health services by cutting federal funding for Planned Parenthood; watch him HERE.
The Associated Press explains the conservative response to Romney’s back and forth HERE:
A day after Mitt Romney downplayed his plans to fight abortion, social conservatives on Wednesday offered the Republican presidential nominee a not-so-subtle reminder of his pledge to do “everything in my power to cultivate, promote, and support a culture of life in America.”
The head of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List distributed an article Romney penned last summer vowing to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood, while backing legislation that would “protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion.” In the June 2011 article, Romney also expressed support for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.
In other words – they know he’s playing politics and expect him to come home when he’s done.
The Los Angeles Times asked the Romney campaign about this contradiction HERE:
Asked by The Times whether Romney’s position on abortion legislation had changed, Saul did not answer directly. Instead, she repeated her initial comment to the Associated Press: “Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life, and he will be a pro-life president.”
The controversy came as Romney tried to woo women voters away from Obama. Throughout the campaign, the president has held a huge lead among women, according to public opinion polls. But last week’s presidential debate apparently undermined that lead.
And don’t count on Romney standing against his conservative base. As we’ve shared HERE:
One conservative Mike Kelly (R-PA) even compared giving women access to free birth control as being a day that will live in infamy like when America was attacked at Pearl Harbor and the terrorist attack of 9/11. Really?
