“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize life is that gift from God. And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”
~Indiana Senate Republican candidate Richard Mourdock on 10/23/2012
The Republican’s “Todd Akin” problem isn’t a Todd Akin problem at all; it’s a Republican problem. The problem at its core is the Republican party fundamentally believes women who get raped or are victims of incest have no right to emergency contraception, access to abortion, or even access to rape crisis centers. You may only think I’m kidding if you haven’t been paying attention. For the life of me – I do not understand why any woman would vote for a Republican. It takes a lot of chutzpah for a bunch of middle aged men to force women to keep the babies of their rapists.
Well – god intended you get raped so … ya know …. just sit back and enjoy I guess right?
Not only that – Richard Mourdock and the vast majority of Republicans (including Mitt Romney) support the “Personhood Amendment”; this would make certain forms of contraception illegal. It would outlaw abortion and the morning after pill. And it would make abortion murder even in cases of rape and incest … so having an abortion would put a woman in jail under charges of 1st degree murder. That’s the Republican party vision for America; it’s not just this one guy.
#1 – The GOP party platform this year does not allow for women to get abortions when they are victims of rape or incest. We wrote about that HERE; from their actual platform:
Faithful to the ‘self-evident’ truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children.
#2 – On July 31st – 203 Republicans voted to make abortion illegal to victims of rape or incest HERE.

#3 – Conservatives were against funding an extension on $455 million in funding the Violence Against Women Act for rape crisis centers and assistance for victims of domestic violence HERE. They only supported it eventually under political pressure because it would make them look as extreme as they are.
#4 – Paul Ryan called rape a “method of conception” recently; you can read about HERE.
#5 – Paul Ryan and Todd Akin co-sponsored a bill limiting federal funding for abortions to victims of “forcible rape” was rated TRUE by Politifact; article HERE.

Richard Mourock then doubled down on his comments again in New Albany, Indiana after the debate:
Here is Mitt Romney’s ad embracing and endorsing Richard Mourdock for Senate THIS WEEK:
