Romney is a pathological liar. Here is the breakdown of today’s foreign policy speech in Virginia. A person who lies this much should be disqualified from being president. It’s just that simple.
I will recommit America to the goal of a democratic, prosperous Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with the Jewish state of Israel. On this vital issue, the President has failed, and what should be a negotiation process has devolved into a series of heated disputes at the United Nations. In this old conflict, as in every challenge we face in the Middle East, only a new President will bring the chance to begin anew.
But when Romney was talking to his private fundraiser for 50k a plate not aware he was being recorded … he said this HERE:
I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say there’s just no way … the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish … [S]o what you do is, you say, you move things along the best way you can. You hope for some degree of stability, but you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem…and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it.
Yeah – in private … one thing. In public – he seeks peace for the Palestinians. And who can forget when Romney was in Israel and said the reason Israel was prosperous and Palestine was struggling was because of a stronger Israeli culture (source). Yeah – it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the Israeli government is occupying Palestinian land and preventing them from farming their own land in many cases and they’re choking off the economy in many vital ways. Yeah – that doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with it. Got it.
The relationship between the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Israel, our closest ally in the region, has suffered great strains. The President explicitly stated that his goal was to put “daylight” between the United States and Israel. And he has succeeded.
Romney says that we should not have any daylight with Israel. But here’s the problem with that.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to go to war with Iran. I’ve written many, many times about that, most recently HERE. So – let’s take Romney directly at his word. If America is to have no daylight with Israel … then a Romney administration would be attacking Iran militarily, unilaterally and pre-emptively without the support of the world to an oil rich country in the middle east. Sound familiar? Because that was so successful the first time around. And the American people are against said aggression. So – Romney is attacking president Obama for siding with the American people and not going to war with Iran. Of course he won’t say that …. but that’s what a Romney administration would look like.
And Netanyahu likes Romney because they worked together in the 70′s and the Israeli newspaper Haaretz has called Romney: Netanyahu’s lapdog HERE.
Romney says this again in his speech:
I will reaffirm our historic ties to Israel and our abiding commitment to its security—the world must never see any daylight between our two nations.
No daylight. Prepare for war with Iran.
This latest assault cannot be blamed on a reprehensible video insulting Islam, despite the Administration’s attempts to convince us of that for so long.
So – he’s trying to politicize the events in Libya. That’s fine because it’s an appropriate time to discuss and foreign policy should be debated. Of course – what happened was a sprint by people in the intelligence community and then members of the Administration to figure out what happened, who was responsible and what we were going to do about it. And since Romney’s bringing up the attack on our embassy in Libya … let’s see how HE responded.
In a rush to win political points … Romney’s campaign immersed itself in American foreign policy while Americans were being murdered calling the Obama administration weak and ineffectual and actually accusing the Obama administration of sympathizing with terrorists. That’s all while Americans civil servants’ bodies were still warm. As we have written about and detailed that timeline HERE:
“Foreign Policy Hands Voice Disbelief At Romney Cairo Statement”: “Bungle… utter disaster…not ready for prime time… not presidential… Lehman moment.” And that’s just the Republicans.
And then after the famous smirk as Romney walks offstage thinking he just won some votes … a Romney aide had the chutzpah to claim that those 4 Americans would not have died had Romney been the president (source). Somebody just hit that aide directly in the face for me. Please. So that’s Romney’s successful foreign policy foray.
This is a dangerous situation that has set back the hope of peace in the Middle East and emboldened our mutual adversaries, especially Iran. Iran today has never been closer to a nuclear weapons capability.
Now – that’s a pretty funny thing to be saying right about now. Iran has had 70% hyperinflation in its currency in the past MONTH thanks to serious economic sanctions imposed by the Obama administration. And according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz – Iran is trying to negotiate for a deal (source). Their current economic position is untenable. I’ve already written about why Iran will compromise on their nuclear program if Obama wins HERE. And NONE of those sanctions would have taken place without the diplomacy that got Russia and China on board. Those two countries could have vetoed those sanctions and they didn’t. They can pull out at any time. If America atttacks Iran – they will pull out and Iran will be handed a huge freebie. Obama’s plan is working; Romney is just an amateur.
I will put the leaders of Iran on notice that the United States and our friends and allies will prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. I will not hesitate to impose new sanctions on Iran, and will tighten the sanctions we currently have.
So – how is this different than the Obama policy exactly?
The President has failed to lead in Syria, where more than 30,000 men, women, and children have been massacred by the Assad regime over the past 20 months.
But as I said on February 22nd of this year … America is and has been engaged in a covert war in Syria. This is obvious from the military grades explosives that detonated on serious infrastructure like oil pipelines, military compounds etc … and there were serious defections and almost all of President Bashar Al-Asaad’s cabinet was assassinated in a bombing inside a highly secure military facility. Or as Romney calls it “failing to lead”. And in case you don’t trust my word on the matter … Reuters revealed publicly on August 2nd that President Obama had signed a secret order to over overthrow the Syrian president HERE. Yes – many died. But … we either put troops in harms way and become an occupying force or we arm the Syrian rebels with munitions, food and intelligence and let them take it on their own. Many innocents die in war; I don’t recall Governor Romney crying about that in Afghanistan, Iraq or his declaration of war on Iran.
In Syria, I will work with our partners to identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values and ensure they obtain the arms they need to defeat Assad’s tanks, helicopters, and fighter jets.
Maybe he missed the Reuters article. I’m sure it was an unintentional false statement. Sure it was.
America’s ability to influence events for the better in Iraq has been undermined by the abrupt withdrawal of our entire troop presence. The President tried—and failed—to secure a responsible and gradual drawdown that would have better secured our gains.
In other words – he thinks we should still be in Iraq. If he were president – he never would have left. No word yet on who would pay for that. Apparently – 1o years was an “abrupt withdrawal”.
And on this, there will be no flexibility with Vladimir Putin.
Well – Romney has said that Russia is America’s #1 geopolitical foe (source). Because the world Romney lives in … the Soviet Union still exists. He does really, really want to emulate Reagan after all but that’s just ridiculous.
And in Afghanistan, I will pursue a real and successful transition to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014.
How is that different from Obama’s policy of transitioning to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014? It’s not. It’s the same. But he said it with conviction.
And I will roll back President Obama’s deep and arbitrary cuts to our national defense that would devastate our military.
That’s a lie. Period. What he is no doubt referring to is the deal that Republicans forced in order to “cut spending”. Paul Ryan voted in favor of this bill that he refers to; it says that if Congress can’t make a deal for $1.3 trillion over 10 years towards the deficit then serious cuts go in place that will be painful for all. That includes defense. Obama’s actual budget on defense spending is below.
I know many Americans are asking a different question: “Why us?” I know many Americans are asking whether our country today—with our ailing economy, and our massive debt, and after 11 years at war—is still capable of leading. I believe that if America does not lead, others will—others who do not share our interests and our values—and the world will grow darker, for our friends and for us.
In other words – we need to spend MORE money on defense. We can afford to do that but we can’t afford more money for our kids in school or universal healthcare or basic regulations on banks. He’s proposing significantly more spending on the military than any Dem is proposing on all other categories combined.
Our friends and allies across the globe do not want less American leadership. They want more—more of our moral support, more of our security cooperation, more of our trade, and more of our assistance in building free societies and thriving economies.
Rest assured – they want Americans to PAY for more defense to defend them. Of course they do. Of course they do. Every country needs to do its part and not count on America to subsidize their defense so they can provide social programs and education to their people.
The President has not signed one new free trade agreement in the past four years.
Of course – that’s a lie. October 11, 2011. Washington Post Headline: Obama signs trade pacts. They write HERE:
President Obama on Friday signed the nation’s largest free-trade agreement since NAFTA — and the first of his administration — with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.
What other countries does Romney want free trade agreements with and why? We don’t know – he doesn’t say. We just know he wants more no matter how bad those deals are for American workers. Because the free flow of American manufacturing jobs under the Bush administration to other countries just wasn’t enough apparently. There are other low wage countries that we can send American jobs to and Romney’s just the man to do it.
