I can’t even believe what I am seeing in this picture. This photo taken on December 6th shows Tarana Akbari crying near several dead and injured people after a suicide bomber targeted Shiite worshippers during a religious ceremony outside the Abul Fazel shrine in Kabul. Tarana no longer wears her best attire which at the time was covered in her own blood as she looked at her dead relatives who were among the 70 people that died that day. Whenever she thinks about that day…she relives the terror and fear that took over her body as she witnessed the horror that was going on around her. She still manages to smile once in awhile, but often wonders why she was so lucky to survive while so many lost their lives. It boggles the mind how there are so many young people around the world who wake up to images like this on a regular basis. Can you imagine if this was our norm?
