Being a member of ALEC isn’t something to be proud of…it’s an organization made up of major corporations that literally write bills, lobby members of Congress behind closed doors and then hand them completed “model legislation” that they then expect to go to the floor of Congress to get passed. And more and more people are starting to find out about just how corrupt this process is…and of course – embarrassed by their involvement and afraid of potential boycotts – twelve major corporations have left ALEC:
Kraft, Pepsi,Coca-Cola, Intuit, the Gates Foundation, McDonalds, Wendy’s, Arizona Public Service, Mars, Inc., American Traffic Solutions, Reed Elsevier, Blue-Cross Blue Shield and Yum Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut).
ALEC is a right wing lobbying group and apparently – Senator Chuck Grassley (IA-R) was so concerned about the exodus of corporations leaving that he decided to tweet that Americans should boycott Coke…FOR LEAVING ALEC. That’s pretty ballsy. I’m actually embarrassed for the people of Iowa that your Senator is so brazen about his having been owned by this organization and the large corporations who fund his ability to exist. A Senator has a 6 year term and he was just re-elected in 2010…so he knows that no one is going to remember this in 2016. But he’s just saying what the rest of the Republican congress would like to but is rightfully too embarrassed to say.
If you don’t know what ALEC is – read more HERE. You can see the real life tweet from Senator Chuck Grassley (IA-R) HERE and you should consider responding to him if you’re passionate about ALEC (we did).
