“Some people have asked if I will let stand the President’s executive action. The answer is that I will put in place my own long-term solution that will replace and supersede the President’s temporary measure. As President, I won’t settle for a stop-gap measure. I will work with Republicans and Democrats to find a long-term solution.”
~Mitt Romney, today
You get it? As president – Mitt will put in place his own long-term solution and eliminate President Obama’s temporary measure … and that would be … wait … for … it. We don’t know yet. He still hasn’t told us what it is. Basically – he’s going to get rid of Obama’s executive order which allows for immigrants to stay here if they are of a certain age and didn’t even come here on their own. And he won’t tell anyone what he’s going to replace it with. He wouldn’t even tell a huge conference of National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) whom he spoke to today.
So – you take these kids who were brought here and had no control over this … they only home they know is America and now we’re going to force these young Latinos to “go back” to a country they don’t even consider home. And make no mistake – this is an attack on Latinos; they’re not targeting Canadians here. The Romney campaign love Latinos so much that when reporters tried to ask questions about Romney’s position … they literally cut off the conference call (source). That was just YESTERDAY … and it has now been SIX entire days since Mitt Romney has been unwilling to take a stance on his position on President Obama’s decision to halt the deportation of young “illegal immigrants”.
Greg Sargent points out HERE:
Romney did repeat that he supports legal status for illegal aliens who want to join the military. But that would impact an estimated 30,000 people, according to Frank Sharry of America’s Voice. He talked about reducing the waiting period for Green Card holders who are trying to get Green Cards for spouses and children, and argued for giving Green Cards to college grads. Both of those are good things, and both have broad support. But they wouldn’t do anything to address the big policy elephant in the room, i.e., what to do about 11 million illegal immigrants — a problem Romney responded to mainly by suggesting more enforcement. And he didn’t address what he’d do about the DREAMers with any specificity.
But we all know that his stated position for those 11 million Latinos currently living in the U.S. (some for 25 years) … his solution to the problem is that they “self-deport”. The Latino community adds great character and dignity to the American experience, and I really think every single politician who won’t stand up for Latinos is a coward.
Mitt Romney said today:
“As president, I won’t settle for a stop-gap measure. I will work with Republicans and Democrats to find a long-term solution. I will prioritize measures that strengthen legal immigration and make it easier. And I will address the problem of illegal immigration in a civil but resolute manner.”
But – in 2010 … in his SECOND year – President Obama pushed forward the Dream Act. And Republicans BLOCKED IT. Those are the facts.
On December 8th, 2010 – the Dream Act passed the Democratically controlled House of Representatives with the vast majority of votes coming from the Democrats. 81% of Democrats voted in favor of the measure; less than 5% of Republicans voted in favor. It still passed. You can see more on this vote HERE.
In the Senate – Democrats received 55 votes for the Dream Act. That’s more than a bare majority. Unfortunately – like everything else in the Senate – Republicans made a calculated decision to block EVERYTHING President Obama offered as a solution. They gambled and won that the American people would not understand what a filibuster was … and Democrats would be blamed regardless of the GOP obstruction. You can see more on that vote HERE.
So – despite having a majority vote in the Senate … the Dream Act didn’t pass. Mitt Romney says that he would find a long term solution for this problem … doesn’t say what that is and will not take a stance on President Obama’s plan. Mitt Romney is a pathological liar and it’s going to take the media calling him out on his lies … and the people to actually start recognizing him for what he really is – a snake oil salesman.

[...] Democrats voted overwhelmingly in the House to pass the Dream Act in 2010 … which would have been step 1 in a comprehensive immigration policy. But in the Senate – even with 55 votes … a solid majority – Republicans used procedural rules to block the Dream Act in the Senate as the vast majority of Republicans voted against the measure. [...] So – President Obama decided to do whatever he could legally with an executive order. This year – he signed an executive order that would stop the deportation of young undocumented immigrants (source). The White House explains who qualifies HERE. Mitt Romney attacked President Obama for his executive order and then when pressed on his position … Romney would not publicly give his position on what he would do regarding undocumented workers. We wrote all about that HERE. [...]
[...] Romney’s idea of focusing on the big issues is to avoid talking about his immigration policy many, many days despite being asked many, many times HERE. [...]
