Mitt Romney said after being booed at the NAACP that he “expected” the strong objection in response to his pledge to repeal President Obama’s health care law. The black audience members rained boos on Romney three times during his speech — first when he said he’d repeal the health law, once when he said Obama’s record proves he hasn’t done enough on the economy and other matters, and once when he told them that he would be a president who makes the lives of African-Americans better.
At a fundraiser later that night- Mitt Romney found an answer for the resounding chorus of boos he triggered at the NAACP. He boasted about the boos to this very different crowd by saying:
When I mentioned I am going to get rid of Obamacare, they weren’t happy … That’s okay, I want people to know what I stand for, and if I don’t stand for what they want, go vote for someone else, that’s just fine. But I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more stuff from the government, tell them to go vote for the other guy—more free stuff. But don’t forget nothing is really free.
Hmm. So, the far-right presidential candidate deliberately antagonized the nation’s most celebrated civil rights organization in the morning, then complained to his donors in Montana about the black voters who want “more free stuff” from the government in the evening.
The “free stuff” comment is a line Romney uses often. Steve Benen (The Maddow Blog) puts this in context with a reminder that black people aren’t the only ones whose desire for free stuff Romney likes to talk about. In fact, he also thinks women needing preventive health care and young people struggling to pay their college tuition are just in search of free stuff too.
Romney himself only pays like 15% tax on all his income…but people who want AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE…are free loaders ?
