“Over the last four years, this president has pushed Republicans and Democrats about as far apart as they can go. And now he and his allies are pushing us all even further apart by dividing us into groups. He demonizes some. He panders to others. His campaign strategy is to smash America apart and then try to cobble together 51% of the pieces.”
~Mitt Romney
Mitt Romney’s statement here is pretty fascinating to watch. This is a guy who won his nomination by outspending his Republican opponents by 10x and carpet bombing them with false ads. This is a guy who has pushed this notion that President Obama isn’t even an American citizen often accusing him of being “foreign to American values”.
This is a guy that has set astonishingly new lows for campaign dishonesty in terms of the types of ads that he runs and the things that he says DAILY. He lies more than any other politician I’ve ever heard in my life.
This is a guy who accuses anyone of wanting to increase taxes on the rich of being guilty of envy and trying to pit private and public workers against each other; he proudly espouses eliminating funding for police, firemen and teachers because they’re public sector workers. This is a guy who has REGULARLY demonizes unions, Latinos, gays and Muslims.
This is a guy who approved an ad that was given a “pants on fire” rating when he accused President Obama of trying to basically just send welfare recipients (i.e. black people *wink*) a check. Remember THIS.
This is a guy whose tax plan would cut taxes for the rich and raise taxes on the middle class.
And as I wrote in “Mitt Romney is the Most Dishonest Politician in Modern History” – 43% of Romney’s statements recorded by Politifact are either false, mostly false or “pants on fire” lies. You really need to look at some of those lies. He’s a pathological liar.
This is a guy who has flip-flopped on almost every single position that he has taken; he does not appear to have any core value other than to win. And he’ll say anything it takes to win … except that he’ll raise taxes on the rich. He won’t say that.
And as Talking Points Memo points out HERE:
On Wednesday morning, Romney took the new tone to CBS News, a few hours after he debuted it in an Ohio speech.
“The president’s campaign is all about division and attack and hatred,” Romney said. “My campaign is about getting America back to work and creating greater unity in this country, which of course has always been the source of America’s vitality and strength.”
Romney accused Obama fully abandoning his “purple America” rhetoric of the past in favor of a campaign that splits the country along deep and painful lines.
“If you look at the ads that have been described and the divisiveness based on income, age, ethnicity and so-forth, it’s designed to bring a sense of enmity and jealousy and anger and this is not in my view what the American people want to see,” Romney said.
And according to the L.A. Times – Romney wrote that speech.
The Boston Herald adds HERE:
While some GOP strategists question whether Romney’s tactic will work, they agree that he is vulnerable among voters who find Obama more personally appealing. Romney and his allies appear bent on persuading voters that Obama is not what he seems.
Appearing on CBS Wednesday, Romney said the Obama campaign is “designed to bring a sense of enmity and jealousy and anger.” The comments echoed the candidate’s call on Tuesday for Obama to “take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago.”
It’s unclear whether Romney can convince voters that Obama is a politician of volcanic anger and ambition. Sometimes called “no-drama Obama,” the president has disappointed liberal activists who see him as too dispassionate, meek and willing to compromise on issues such as a government-provided health insurance option.
Some GOP activists say Romney’s time would be better spent talking about jobs and the economy, even if Obama has pitted wealthy Americans against the less-wealthy and allowed allies to level harsh charges against Romney.
And the reason that Mitt Romney really needs you to dislike President Obama is because Romney himself is the least liked politician running for president in modern history. No one in recent memory has been viewed less favorably than Mitt Romney. And he figures – if you’re going to dislike him … might as well make it to where everyone dislikes both choices to turn away moderate voters and put this election in the hands of the polarized voters on right and left. That’s his only way to win. And THAT is dividing Americans.
As if I didn’t explain this enough – Chris Matthews explains the politics behind Romney’s decision to go scorched earth:
