Today – Mitt Romney’s wife – Ann – said, “We’ve given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and how we live our life.”
But as the Huffington Post reported yesterday – the Romney campaign has actually produced ZERO complete tax returns. The 2010 tax return which they said was complete left out an important addendum which would have had to be filed to report on his offshore bank accounts. (source)
And they don’t want you to know how the Romney’s turned their tax exempt IRA account that is stashed in an offshore bank account into as much as $100 million. (source)
And this matters for the debate because Mitt Romney claims that the rich should be paying much, much lower tax rates. But the reality is … we’re likely to find that due to all of the loopholes that already exist for super wealthy people ….. he probably paid little if any taxes in some of the years preceding 2010. So – how is he going to argue for lower taxes for himself and his buddies when today HE ALREADY has lower taxes than the average American. He won’t show you his long form 1040 …. and we want to see it. And – we’re not letting up.
If they’re not going to show his tax records … they must be pretty damning. It might even show how much money he continued to profit from Bain Capital even after he claims he left. That’s significant because Bain Capital is known for creating hundreds of millions in wealth for rich investors like Romney while middle class workers get left holding the bag. A further inspection of his business record will show he is not a job creator as he contends; he’s a vulture capitalist.
But a USA Today/Gallup poll shows a majority of Americans want to see what he’s hiding HERE:
Agree by a substantial margin of 17 percentage points that Romney in particular should release more than two years of returns. By 54%-37%, they say Romney should release tax returns from additional years. Those calling for more disclosure include 75% of Democrats, 53% of independents and 30% of Republicans.
