Big win for the ACLU; they acquired these emails through a public records request to the state legislature. Now the Supreme Court already ruled on the law recently saying that 3/4 of the law was unconstitutional with the last 1/4 potentially unconstitutional depending on how it was utilized in the future. So – SCOTUS left open the door for further legal action if in fact abuse occurs when the law is implemented. You can read more about that 5-3 SCOTUS ruling HERE.
But the SCOTUS didn’t have access to these emails which show Russell Pearce had deep seated racist intentions. The bottom line to all of this – if you support the Arizona law …. you’re a bigot. Now you may have concerns about immigration and maybe we don’t see eye to eye there etc etc – all good. But it was clearly in violation of the Constitution. And this notion that police should pull someone over for “looking illegal” i.e. being brown skinned is just offensive. This law wasn’t created to protect America from Canadians and their socialism (gasp).
The Arizona Republican picks out these choice quotes of emails from former state Senate President Russell Pearce from 2006 to 2011 HERE:
“The illegal aliens in the United States have a crime rate that’s two-and-a-half times that of non-illegal aliens. In particular, their children, are going to make a huge additional crime problem in the U.S.”
“The birth rate among illegal immigrants is substantially higher than the population at large.”
“Last week, Denver’s illegal aliens sang our national anthem in Spanish and bastardized the words of OUR country’s most sacred song.”
“Battles commence as Mexican nationalists struggle to infuse their men into American government and strengthen control over their strongholds. One look at Los Angeles with its Mexican-American mayor shows you Vincente Fox’s general Varigossa commanding an American city.”
“They create enclaves of separate groups that shall balkanize our nation into fractured nightmares of social unrest and poverty.”
“Corruption is the mechanism by which Mexico operates. Its people spawn more corruption wherever they go because it is their only known way of life.”
“Tough, nasty illegals and their advocates grow in such numbers that law and order will not subdue them. They run us out of our cities and states. They conquer our language and our schools. They render havoc and chaos in our schools.”
“We are much like the Titanic as we inbreed millions of Mexico’s poor, the world’s poor and we watch our country sink.”
But – this guy got his. He was removed from office in November of 2011 in a recall election mainly because of this law. Karma. Although he’s running for office again (source).
And this is the same guy who was vilified for saying people in the theatre of the Batman premiere in the Aurora, CO shootings just didn’t have enough courage. Talking Points Memo reports today HERE:
“Someone should have stopped this man. Someone could have stopped this man. All that was needed was one Courages/Brave (sic) man prepared mentally or otherwise to stop this it could have been done.”
Apparently – we’ll allow men either prepare mentally or otherwise to serve in state senate as well.
